Introduction
Location:
- The Mahishasura Mardhini Amman Temple is situated in Mathur Village, near Thiruthani, in Thiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.
- The temple is connected to the famous Murugan Temple at Thiruthani through legend.
Puranic Significance:
- The Swayambu Amman Idol was discovered in the 1960s near the railway track at a place called Sakthi Medu.
- In 1954, during the construction of the railway track between Chennai and Tirupathi, a group of workers witnessed the appearance of the Goddess as a Swayambu (self-manifested) form at this location.
- Enchanted by the divine sight, the workers constructed a small temple to honor the goddess. Over time, this humble shrine developed into the significant temple that stands today.
- The temple is revered for housing the deity Mahishasura Mardhini, who is a fierce form of Goddess Shakti. This form of the goddess is associated with her triumph over the demon Mahishasura.
- The Mathur temple is managed by the Thiruthani Temple authorities and is famous for the deity’s smiling face, even while Mahishasura lies defeated at her feet.
- The idol of Mahishasura Mardhini is approximately 10 feet high and depicts the goddess in a benevolent form despite the violent battle she fought with the demon.
Special Features:
- The main temple features a vast corridor adorned with colorful pillars, offering a scenic view of the Tirupathi hills.
- The idol of Mahishasura Mardhini stands at 10 feet and showcases the goddess with eight hands (Ashtabuja), each holding a different weapon. The goddess wears a skull garland, symbolizing her power and strength.
- A unique feature of this idol is her smiling face, even while her foot rests on Mahishasura, symbolizing her mercy and power.
- The idol is installed under a simple roof structure.
- At the temple entrance, there are shrines dedicated to Lord Vinayaga and Om Shakthi.
- The Sthala Vriksham (Temple Tree) is a Neem tree, but uniquely, the leaves of this tree do not taste bitter, which is considered a divine attribute.
Festivals:
- On New Moon and Full Moon days, the temple observes grand milk abishekam with 108 liters of milk and conducts special homams as part of the celebrations.
