Introduction

160 km from Chennai,10 km from Villupuram on the highway to Trichy. Perangiyur is located in the distance. Perangiyur can be reached via Thiruvennallur and Ulundurpet. The village is located on the Chennai-Trichy National Highway, 10 km from Villupuram, south of the Tenpennayar. The Tirumulanathar Temple, built during the Parantaka Chola period, still stands today. The inscriptions in the temple refer to the town as Perangur, Beringur. Rajendran I’s inscription reads, “In Rajendra Chola Valanad, in the country of Thirumuna Padi, Beringur Pramadayam is located.” The name of the temple is mentioned in the inscriptions as Moolasthanamudaiyar Koil and Lord Moolasthanamudaiyar Mahadevar. Inscriptions of various kings beginning with Paranthakan are found. The Thirumulanathar Temple houses beautiful sculptures of the early Cholas. The Ganesha sculpture around the temple of Thirumulanathar is special. Usually Lord Shiva carries a deer in his hand. But the neuroscientist is proud to say that carrying the Ganesha deer here is unique.

Puranic Significance

Both the Tirumulanathar Temple Sanctuary and the Arthamandapam date back to the time when the temple was built. The faade is contemporary.
