Introduction
From Villupuram (22 km) on the road to Pondicherry. The temple is located in Kandamangalam in the Villupuram district. The temple is easily seen with a sanctum sanctorum and an arthamandapam. The temple is in a dilapidated condition with no roof. The square barn is located. There are inscriptions on the south end of the sanctuary. This is the first Paranthakan temple. There are no ancient sculptures in this temple. The temple dates back to the Parantaka Chola period. It is a heritage site under the Archaeological Survey of Tamil Nadu.
Puranic Significance
Inscriptions are located in the southern basement of the sanctuary. The inscription on the temple indicates that it belonged to the Paranthakan period. This town was given the name of Madurantaka Mangalam by Srikantharathita during the Chola period. Inscriptions indicate that the town was named after Kandaradithan, the husband of Sembian Madhavi, the father of Uttama Chola, and the late Sivagnani. Also the temple is given as Thirunareeswaram in the inscriptions. Lord Thirunareeswarathu has been given as Mahadeva. There are one Shiva temple and two Vishnu temples in this city. One of the two Vishnu temples is called Ceythangi Vinnagara and Seyanthangi Vinnagara Peruman. Thiruvaipadi is another Vishnu named Alwar. The temple is mentioned in the Rajendran I inscription.
