Introduction

Location:

  • Thiruvidaikazhi is located near Thirukkadaiyur in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu.
  • The temple is 6 km from Thirukkadaiyur and 32 km from Nagapattinam.
  • Situated along the route to Mayuram and Tharangampadi, 6 km from the nearest railway station, Mayiladuthurai, and 40 km from Trichy airport.

Historical & Puranic Significance:

  • The temple is associated with Lord Murugan and Lord Shiva, with both deities present in the same Garbhagriha.
  • The temple is a significant Rahu Kethu and Sevvai Parihara Sthalam (for planetary worship) and is one of the Thiruvisaippa Shiva Sthalams.
  • Senthanar Swamigal attained Mukthi (liberation) here.
  • Sthala Puranam:
    • Lord Balasubramanian (Murugan) killed Surapadman and his son Hiranya Suran in this location.
    • After the battle, Murugan prayed to Lord Shiva (Papavinasamurthi) to wash away his sins.
    • Rahu is also believed to have offered prayers to Lord Murugan here.
    • The Nichayathaartham (betrothal) of Murugan and Deivanai (his consort) is said to have occurred in this temple.

Temple Features:

  • Age: Believed to be over 1000 years old.
  • Deities:
    • Lord Murugan (Balasubramaniar) faces east under the Thiru Kura tree.
    • A Shivalingam is placed behind the main deity, facing east, and a Spatika Linga is situated in front of Lord Murugan.
    • Goddess Deivanai has a separate Sannadhi (shrine) where she is depicted in a penance posture (Thapas Kolam), performing penance to marry Lord Murugan.
  • Garbhagriha: Both Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan are present here, with Lord Shiva on Murugan’s left, indicating that Murugan performs pooja to Lord Shiva.
  • Special Structures:
    • The Sthala Vriksham (sacred tree) is the Thirukura Maram.
    • The presiding deity of Shiva is Babavinasa Peruman.
    • There is no separate shrine for Sri Valli, another consort of Murugan.
    • The temple lacks a Navagraha Sannadhi (planetary shrine), but there are Iyannar Sannadhis around the temple.
    • Nandhi (the bull) and an elephant are located in the Artha Mandapam.
    • An Adi Lingam is found under a tree in the outermost praharam (temple courtyard).
  • Gopuram (Tower): Illustrates stories from the Kandha Puranam.

Unique Features:

  • The Dwajasthambam (flagpole) is unique because it has both Pillayar (Ganesha) and Murugan seated at the base, which is not typically seen at other temples (where only Pillayar is found at the base).
  • Devotees participate in Padayathras (pilgrimages on foot) from Chidambaram in the Tamil month of Purattasi, and from Sikkal (where Lord Murugan got his weapon Sakthivel from Ambal) in the month of Vaikasi.
