Introduction

The Devi Karu Maari Amman Temple, situated in the Thiruverkadu locality, a suburb of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to Goddess Sakthi and is particularly famous for its significance in resolving Raghu and Kethu Dosha issues.

Origin and Legend:

The temple is renowned for its connection to snake worship. Devotees believe that Karu Mariamman took the form of a snake, and this temple has become popular for this unique aspect.
According to legend, there was an ant-hill in the area which people had been worshipping as Mother Ambica. After appearing in a devotee’s dream, the Goddess instructed him to build a temple in the same spot.
Upon excavating the ant-hill, they found Ambica as a Swayambu (self-manifested deity) and constructed the temple.
Karu Maari Amman, a form of Sakthi, is often called “Karuvil Illadha Karumari” because she was not born from the womb.

Other Names and Significance:

The temple has multiple names based on the various legends associated with it. These include Velankaadu, Velkadu, and Thiruverkadu.
Devotees believe that this temple is where Lord Surya (Sun God) regained his lost powers and glory after apologizing to the Goddess.
The power of turmeric from Devi Karumari is highly regarded, and it is believed to bless unmarried girls with suitable bridegrooms and provide children to childless couples.

Other Deities:

The temple features a shrine for Lord Vinayaka (Ganesha), where he is worshipped first before the main deity.
The shrine also houses Lord Srinivasa Perumal, Lord Rama, Lakshman, Seetha, and Hanuman idols.
Sage Agasthiyar, Lord Shiva’s sister, and other deities such as Lord Murugan, Dhakshinamoorthy, Mahalakshmi, Angala Parameswari, and others have their respective shrines in the temple premises.

Rituals and Festivals:

The temple performs go puja, the worship of cows, every morning.
Archana with Kumkum is carried out daily between 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM.
A yagna with red chillies is conducted on the new moon day every month.
The Thaipoosam Latcharchana and Poornima Latcharchana are major annual events.
Devotees perform Kumkum archana, light camphor, and offer milk and eggs to the snakes in an anthill found under a Peepul tree.
This temple attracts devotees from neighboring states for various pujas and festivals, especially those related to Raghu and Kethu Dosha.
