Semmanchery is believed to have been part of Thondaimandalam, a region that included North Arcot, South Arcot, and Chengalpet districts of Tamil Nadu, along with parts of Andhra Pradesh. Thondaimandalam was ruled by the Pallavas, with Kanchipuram as their headquarters.
The temple is thought to be over 1,500 years old and may have been built by the Pallavas. Subsequent renovations are said to have been undertaken by Nayak Kings and Chettiars.
In 2007, the temple was in a dilapidated condition, but it has since been renovated with the support of devotees and philanthropists.

The temple’s historical significance is intertwined with the story of Maharishi Sownaka, a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Maharishi Sownaka prayed to Lord Vishnu during his visit to Serumanancheri (now Semmencheri). Another legend involves a Pallava king who regained his eyesight by worshipping Lord Srinivasa Perumal at this temple during a period of famine. As a result, it is believed that the Lord fulfills the wishes of devotees who sincerely pray here.
