• Temple Name: Angala Parameswari Temple (also known as Poongavanathamman Temple).

• Unique Feature: Instead of a lion, a Nandi idol is placed in front of the sanctum, which is rare in Amman (Goddess) temples.

Puranic Significance

• Mythology:
  • Goddess Parvathi and Lord Shiva were traveling from Melmalayanur to Ramapuram (Putlur).
  • Tired from the journey, Parvathi asked Shiva for water. While he searched, heavy rains flooded the river, delaying his return.
  • Exhausted, she lay down, and an anthill grew over her, merging her essence with it.
  • When Shiva returned, he found her in the anthill and stood beside her, earning the name Thandavarayan.
• Nandi Placement: The presence of Lord Shiva next to the Goddess is the reason for having Nandi in front of the sanctum, making it unique among Amman temples.
• Miraculous Event:
  • A villager named Ponmeni, tortured by a moneylender, prayed to the Goddess for help.
  • He encountered an old woman (the Goddess in disguise) and assisted her in fetching water.
  • The anthill became visible as the Goddess appeared, granting him relief from poverty and hardship.
  • The temple gained the name Poongavanathu Amman after her emergence.

Beliefs

• Prayers and Rituals:
  • Devotees seek blessings for children, assistance with wedding proposals, and resolution of family problems.
  • Women tie a piece of their sari to the neem tree as part of their prayers.
  • After their wishes are fulfilled, devotees return to thank the Goddess with pujas.
• Drishti Removal Ritual:
  • Devotees undergo a ritual to remove “drishti” (evil eye) by circling a lemon around their head and crushing it underfoot before entering the temple.
  • A trident (Trishul) is placed in the temple where remaining lemons are pressed.
• Special Customs:
  • Women leave a lime fruit at the feet of the Goddess with a prayer; if it rolls and touches their sari, it symbolizes the fulfillment of their wish.
  • Many devotees offer Thula Baram (weight equivalent of their body weight) if their prayers are answered.
