Introduction
- Location: Patal Bhubaneshwar, meaning the subterranean shrine of Lord Shiva, is situated approximately 91 kilometers from Pithoragarh and 14 kilometers north of Gangolihat in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India.
- Structure: This limestone cave temple is renowned for its unique cave system, accessed through a narrow tunnel leading to a series of interconnected caves. The main cave is approximately 160 meters long and 90 feet deep. Stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations, created by the continuous flow of water, are illuminated to enhance the otherworldly atmosphere.
- Deity: It is believed that this cave enshrines Lord Shiva along with 33 koti demigods (33 types of gods), making it a site of immense religious significance.
Puranic Significance
- Legend of Discovery: The cave was first discovered by Raja Ritupurna, a king from the Surya Dynasty who ruled Ayodhya during the Treta Yuga. According to legend, King Nala sought refuge from his wife, Queen Damayanti, and was guided to this cave by Ritupurna after a series of mystical events involving a deer and a dream.
- Divine Encounter: Inside the cave, Ritupurna was met by Sheshnag, who carried him through the cave, allowing him to witness the wonders of the gods, including the presence of Lord Shiva and the 33 koti gods. The cave remained closed for ages until it was rediscovered by Adi Shankaracharya in 1191 AD, marking the beginning of modern pilgrimage at Patal Bhuvaneshwar.
- Connection to Mount Kailash: The cave is said to have an underground route leading to Mount Kailash, and it is believed that the Pandavas meditated here before embarking on their final journey to the Himalayas.
- Pilgrimage Significance: Worshipping at Patal Bhuvaneshwar is considered as meritorious as visiting the Char Dham of Uttarakhand. The Bhandari family, priests at the temple, have been performing rituals for over 20 generations, preserving the temple’s rich history and lore.
Beliefs and Practices
- Worship and Blessings: Devotees believe that prayers offered at this temple bestow longevity and wealth. Saturn Pradosha, a special day dedicated to Lord Shiva, holds particular significance. It is said that performing Nandi worship on this day brings peace to deceased ancestors, who in turn bless their descendants with joy.
- Unique Shiva Lingam: A remarkable feature within the cave is a Shiva Lingam that represents the Kali Yuga and is believed to be growing continuously. There’s a belief that when the cone at the top touches the mountain, it will signify the end of the Kali Yuga.
