Introduction

  • Location: Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is one of the most prominent Sikh gurdwaras located in Delhi, India, near Connaught Place, on Baba Kharak Singh Marg.
  • Historical Background: It is associated with the eighth Sikh Guru, Guru Har Krishan, and was originally established as a small shrine by Sikh General Sardar Baghel Singh in 1783 on a bungalow donated by Raja Jai Singh of Amer, who oversaw the construction of nine Sikh shrines in Delhi during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II.
  • Iconic Features: The gurdwara is easily recognizable by its stunning golden dome and tall flagpole, known as Nishan Sahib.

Puranic Significance

  • Historical Origin: The site originally belonged to Raja Jai Singh and was known as Jaisinghpura Palace. It was situated in the historic neighborhood of Jaisingh Pura, which was demolished to make way for the Connaught Place shopping district.
  • Guru Har Krishan’s Stay: The gurdwara commemorates the stay of Guru Har Krishan in 1664. During a smallpox and cholera epidemic, Guru Har Krishan provided aid and fresh water from a well at the bungalow.
  • Guru’s Sacrifice: Unfortunately, he contracted the illness himself and passed away on March 30, 1664. To honor him, a small tank was later constructed over the well, and its water is revered for its healing properties.
  • Pilgrimage and Reverence: The gurdwara and its holy pond (Sarovar) have become significant places of reverence for Sikhs, with special congregations held on Guru Har Krishan’s birth anniversary.

Special Features

  • Complex Facilities: The Gurdwara complex includes the main gurdwara, a kitchen (Langar hall), a large holy pond (Sarovar), a school, and an art gallery.
  • Langar Tradition: True to Sikh principles, the concept of langar is practiced, where people of all races and religions can eat together in the Gurdwara kitchen.
  • Educational and Medical Services: The complex houses a higher secondary school, Baba Baghel Singh Museum, a library, and a hospital, promoting education and healthcare.
  • Modern Amenities: The Gurdwara and Langar hall are air-conditioned for the comfort of visitors, and a new “Yatri Niwas” (travellers hostel) and multi-level parking space have been constructed to accommodate pilgrims and guests.
