“Splendid miniature Ramayana sculptures”

Temple: Kodandarama Swamy Temple, Tirupati City, Andhra Pradesh.

Period: The initial construction of this temple is believed to date back to the 10th-11th century during the Chola period. The present structure we see today was constructed in 1480 by Narasimha Muthaliyar and others in the Vijayanagara architectural style.

Located in the heart of Tirupati city, the Kodandarama Temple is highly esteemed. During the evening procession, Kodandarama, along with Sita Devi on his left and Lakshmana on his right, blesses devotees. The temple’s foundation is believed to have been laid during the 10th-11th century Chola period. According to historical records, the present structure was built in 1480 by Narasimha Muthaliyar in the Vijayanagara architectural style. The royal insignias of the Vijayanagara dynasty can be seen in the carvings of the outer mantapas. Despite some sculptures being damaged due to the passage of time, their artistic significance remains significant. The presence of Vishwamitra Muni with Rama and Lakshmana adds to the grandeur of the temple. Several scenes from the Ramayana, such as the marriage of Rama’s brothers, Ravana’s abduction of Sita, Jatayu trying to stop Ravana, Rama breaking seven trees with his bow, Vali-Sugriva fight, Rama trying to kill Vali, Vali seeking forgiveness, Sita throwing her necklace to Anuman, the construction of the bridge to Lanka, and the Vanaras worshipping Rama and Sita, are intricately carved in the temple, creating a captivating spectacle.
