Introduction

The Sri Radha Madan Mohan Temple in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, is one of the oldest and most revered temples in the region, dedicated to Lord Madan Mohan, a name for Lord Krishna. The temple has significant historical and puranic importance.

Puranic Significance:

  • The temple is believed to be around 5000 years old and has a rich history. According to popular folklore, the temple was initially constructed by Vajranabh, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna. Over time, the deities within the temple were lost or concealed.
  • The discovery of the deity of Madan Mohan, the central deity of the temple, is attributed to Advaita Acharya. He found the deity at the base of an old banyan tree during his visit to Vrindavan. He entrusted the worship of Madana Mohan to his disciple, Purusottama Chaube, who later passed the deity to Sanatana Goswami.
  • In 1580 AD, the temple was reconstructed under the guidance of Sri Sanatana Goswami, with support from a Multan trader named Kapur Ram Das.
  • In 1670 AD, the region was invaded by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. To protect the original idol of Madan Mohan, it was secretly relocated to Jaipur by King Jai Singh, just before the attack on Vrindavan and Mathura temples by Aurangzeb. The deities were later moved to Karauli by King Gopal Singh.
  • The original deities from the Shri Radha Madan Mohan Temple in Vrindavan are presently installed in the Madan Mohan Temple in Karauli, Rajasthan. The deity of Madan Mohan is said to resemble Lord Krishna from the waist down.
  • In 1748 AD, a replica of Madan Mohan was established in the Madan Mohan temple in Vrindavan, allowing devotees to continue their worship.
  • In 1819 AD, Nand Kumar Basu rebuilt the temple at the foot of a hill near the Yamuna River in Vrindavan.
  • The Shri Radha Madan Mohan temple of Vrindavan houses a replica of the original deities that are installed in the Madan Mohan temple in Karauli.

Architectural Features:

  • The temple is known for its Nagara style of architecture, and it is built in an oval shape using red sandstone.
  • It stands at a height of 20 meters and is located near the Yamuna River.
  • The temple has a prominent place in Vrindavan and is an essential pilgrimage site for devotees of Lord Krishna. The beautiful architecture and historical significance make it a must-visit site for those exploring Vrindavan’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
