Puranic Significance
800 years ago, two families from a town called Uthrakosamangai came to visit their family deity, Azakar Kovil Perumal, along with Nerthika. On the way they rested at Viradhanur. They cradled their baby in the banyan tree there and made them sleep. Adults are also asleep. When he woke up, he did not find the baby in the cradle.
The child was sitting on the tree. Those who saw this cried, “Lord! Save the child,” they cried. Then Lord told him to build a temple in that town and worship him. According to the Lord’s order, they also installed the idol of Rishabaru and built a temple and worshiped it. As he wept without seeing the child, the Lord was given the name of “Alutha Kanneer Atriya Eswarar”.
