Introduction

Thirukameeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Vellur Village near Musiri in Trichy District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Thirukameeswarar and Mother is called as Shivakamasundari. Sivakamasundari is one of the highlights of this temple. According to the inscription, it was rebuilt by Chola I in the 6th century and was consecrated. It is currently under the control of the Hindu Charitable Trust. The shrine has two entrances. One has gates facing south and the other facing east. Through the east gate, there is an altar and a Nandi Deva Mandapam. According to the temple there is a temple passage.

Puranic Significance

It is believed that Shiva Linga in this Temple was installed and worshipped by Mother Mahalakshmi. The Temple has two entrances; one from south and the other from east. Nandhi, Balipeedam and Dwaja Sthambam are located after the entrance facing sanctum. Presiding Deity is called as Thirukameeswarar. Dhakshina Moorthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma and Vishnu Durga are the niche idols around the sanctum walls. Mother is housed in a separate south facing shrine. Shrines for Vinayagar, Valli-Devasena-Subramanya, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas can be seen in the temple corridors. Sculptures of Musukundha worshipping Shiva and Manmadan & Rathi worshipping Shiva in this temple shows the artistic splendor of yesteryears. Stalam Shiva is special to be dedicated and worshiped by Mahalakshmi. This temple is suitable for those who are in the business of making gold and silver jewellery to come and worship. Aishwarya Mahalakshmi, the Goddess of Mercy, is enshrined in a marvelous procession in the Kubera part of the temple with the Aishwarya crown in the shade of a villow tree like nowhere else.
