Introduction
Mallikarjuneswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Vellar Village near Omalur in Salem District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Mallikarjuneswarar and Mother is called as Maragathavalli. The Temple is believed to be 1500 years old. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Sundarar.
Puranic Significance
This is a small Hill Temple. Devotees have to climb 100 steps from the foot hill to reach this Temple. Presiding Deity is called as Mallikarjuneswarar. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Arthamandapam is situated before the sanctum. Nandi can be found outside the Arthamandapam facing sanctum. Mother is called as Maragathavalli. Her shrine is located in Ranga Mandapam. There are shrines for Mappilai Vinayagar, Kannimoola Ganapathy, and Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli & Deivanai, Kala Bhairava, Chandikeswarar, Suryan and Chandran in the temple premises. Sthala Vriksham is Vilvam tree. There is a well in the north eastern side of the temple.
Festivals
Margazhi Thiruvadhirai (Dec- Jan), Shivarathri, Theipirai Ashtami and Pradoshams are celebrated here.
