Introduction

Vedapuri Sri Dakshinamurthi Temple is dedicated to lord Shiva, located in the vedapuri village, Theni district, Tamilnadu. Here the 9 feet tall presiding deity Lord Dakshinamurthi is facing south

Puranic Significance 

Maha Mandapam of the temple measures 108 feet in length and 54 feet in width. The construction is such that the devotee can comfortably worship the Lord from any point in the mandap. They can worship the presiding deity and the Vimana simultaneously.

This is a temple dedicated to Wisdom God-Gnanamurthi Dakshinamurthi in Vedapuri. Presiding Lord is 9 feet tall facing south. The Moola Mantras by the devotees are placed under the foundation as per norms. Indicating the significance of the five letters Mantra – Na Ma Shi Va Ya, there are five Kalasas on the Vimana the tower above the sanctum sanctorum. Coconut breaking is allowed only during puja time. Also the Kadalai malai –garland is not allowed in the temple, it should be submitted only in packets. Only Vilwa garlands are allowed. No camphor aarati is allowed in the temple.

Beliefs

Besides usual prayers for wedding and child boon, people pray to Lord for good education and wisdom. Devotees perform abishek to Lord offering vastras.

Festivals

The temple follows a five time puja system a day, beginning from the Vishwarupa darshan at 5.00 a.m. followed by abishek to Dakshinamurthi., Kalasandhi puja at 8.30 a.m. Kaleeswara puja at 11.00 a.m., and Uchikala puja at 11.30. The temple is closed for the first half of the day then at 12.00 a.m. The temple opens again at 5.00 p.m. Kaleeswara puja is performed at 6.00 p.m. followed by Maha Deeparadhana at 6.30 p.m. Arthajama puja is performed at 8.00 p.m. The temple closes for the day with Tirukappu at 8.30 p.m. Besides the above routine, special pujas are dedicated to Lord Dakshinamurthi on Thursdays with 16 hospitalities-Upacharas in the evening-Sayaraksha puja with Sahasranama chanting. During the Pradosha days – 13th day of new moon or full moon days – special pujas are dedicated to Lord Shiva and Nandhi from 4.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. with special abishek and aradhanas.
