Introduction

The Magudeswarar Temple in Kodumudi is a large Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva in Erode district of Kongu nadu, Tamil Nadu, India. This is the sixth temple in Kongu, the region praised in the Thevaram hymns. it is situated on the banks of the river Kaveri. The sage Agastya is associated with this temple.The temple is about 40 km from Erode and about 25 km from Karur in Erode district. Puranic Significance

  • Location & Structure
    • Situated on the banks of the Kaveri River.
    • Houses three adjacent temples for Lords Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma within the same premises.
    • All three temple towers (Gopurams) face east.
    • Features epigraphs from the reign of King Sundarapandiyan Kesari.
  • Legend of the Five Gemstones
    • Competition between Adiseshan (Serpent of Lord Vishnu) and Vayu (Wind God) to prove their strength.
    • Mount Meru was placed in the center, held tightly by Adiseshan, while Vayu tried to push him away.
    • Due to the immense force, Meru’s peak (Magudam) split into five pieces, each transforming into a gemstone and falling in different locations:

    • The diamond that fell at Kodumudi became the Swayambulingam (self-manifested lingam), while the rest of the stones turned into hills.
    • Since the lingam originated from Mount Meru, Lord Shiva here is called Magudeswarar.
  • Association with Sages
    • Sage Agasthiyar is believed to have installed and worshipped the Shiva Lingam. His fingerprints can still be seen on the deity.
    • Sage Bharadwajar witnessed Lord Shiva performing a divine dance at Kodumudi.
    • Both Sage Agasthiyar and Sage Bharadwajar were blessed with Lord Shiva’s wedding darshan at this temple.

Beliefs

Those afflicted by Raghu Dosham (adverse effect of planet Raghu) and those facing obstacles in marriage or child birth may pray here for relief. For longevity and betterment of life, people perform Poojas (abhishekam) to Lord Vinayakar using an equal number of pots of water as their age.

Deities in the Temple

  • Goddess Saraswathi has a separate shrine near the Ambal Shrine.
  • Other deities include:
    • Lord Dakshinamurthy
    • Lord Hanuman
    • Navagraham (Nine Planets) in the temple corridors
  • Lord Mahavishnu is worshipped as Pallikonda Perumal and Veeranarayana Perumal.
  • The Vishnu and Brahma temples inside the premises are unique because both deities are believed to be worshipping Lord Shiva.

Rituals & Worship

  • Tarpan/Shradh Rituals: Devotees gather in large numbers to perform ancestral rituals (Tarpan) on new moon days on the banks of the Kaveri River.
  • Ayushya Homam for Longevity: Many devotees celebrate their 60th birthday (Shasti Poorthi) here with special Poojas.
  • Serpent (Nagar) Worship: Since Adiseshan (King of Serpents) was responsible for the origin of this temple, devotees perform rituals to remove Naga Dosham.
    • Small Nagar idols are installed under the Vanni tree as part of the worship.

Ancient Vanni Tree & Lord Brahma’s Idol

  • The Vanni Tree in the temple is believed to be over 3000 years old.
  • Under this tree is a unique Lord Brahma idol with only three faces. The Vanni Tree is considered his fourth face.
  • The tree exhibits two distinct characteristics:
    • Some parts have thorns, while others are completely thornless.
    • It does not blossom or bear fruit.
  • Mystical Property: A leaf from this tree, if placed in water, is believed to keep the water pure for years.

Sacred Theertham (Temple Tank) & Healing Powers

  • A holy dip in the Kaveri River followed by worship of Lords Shiva and Vishnu is believed to:
    • Cure diseases
    • Provide relief from ailments
  • Historical Miracle: A Pandya prince had a medical condition where his fingers were not growing. After taking a dip in the river and praying to Lord Shiva, his fingers grew to normal size.
    • In gratitude, the Pandya king constructed the three main Gopurams (temple towers) and renovated the temple.
    • Due to this connection with the Pandya kingdom, the place is also called Pandikkodumudi.

  • Rahu Dosham: Those affected by Rahu Dosham (malefic influence of Rahu) pray here for relief.
  • Marriage & Childbirth Obstacles: Devotees seeking marriage or progeny blessings offer prayers here.

    • Devotees perform abhishekam to Lord Vinayakar by offering as many pots of water as their age for longevity and well-being.

Festivals

“Chithirai Thirunal” festival is celebrated for 11 days in the months of April-May and is the main festival of this temple. Devotees also come in huge numbers on the “Aadi Perukku” day in July-August. Special Poojas are performed in this temple on new moon, full moon and “Pradosham” days.
