Introduction

• The Komalavalli Amman Sametha Choleeswarar Temple, located in Thuvakudi in the Trichy district of Tamil Nadu, is a renowned temple known for its remedies for Naga Dosha, Kala Sarpa Dosha, and Putra Dosha. The temple is highly revered by devotees seeking blessings for childbirth and those facing astrological challenges. It is situated about 21 km from the central bus station of Trichy.

Puranic Significance:

• The Choleeswarar Temple has its roots in a legend involving King Kulothunga Chola II, who sought divine assistance for his sister Komalavalli, who suffered from Naga Dosha (an astrological affliction). Upon consulting the royal astrologer, the king was advised to perform remedies for her dosha. Seeking guidance from Lord Shiva, he was instructed by a divine voice to build a temple in her honor.
• Following this divine direction, the king built the temple and dedicated it to Lord Choleeswarar and Goddess Komalavalli Amman. The goddess was named after the king’s sister as a tribute to her, and the temple remains a significant site for those seeking relief from Naga Dosha and other astrological afflictions.

Special Features:

• The Choleeswarar Temple, believed to be over 1200 years old, is notable for its unique features:
  1. Navagrahas (the nine planetary deities) are enshrined with their respective consorts, which is a rare arrangement in temples.
  2. The temple also has a special shrine dedicated to Kala Bhairava, and a rare Nataraja idol is present alongside Sivakamasundari Amman.
  3. A remarkable phenomenon occurs where the sun’s rays illuminate the main deity for six days each year, adding a mystical dimension to the temple’s sanctity.
• Devotees believe that worshipping at this temple can help alleviate Naga Dosha, which is thought to create obstacles in life, particularly regarding marriage and childbirth.

Belief:

• A unique ritual, the Nakshatra Parihara Puja (star remedy puja), is conducted on the birth star (nakshatra) of devotees throughout the year. During this puja, kalashas (sacred pots) are placed before the deities, and specific prayers are performed in front of Lord Choleeswarar’s sanctum.
