Introduction
Punyakotinathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Thiruvidaivasal Village in Thiruvarur District of Tamilnadu. This Place is also called as Thiruvidaivaai.This is the 275th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam which was found after 274 temples on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. This was due to Tirugnanasambandar hymns Kalvettu on the Karuvarai wall. The 275th Thevara Sthalam added in 1917.
Puranic Significance
Vidaiyavan, of the Surya Vamsam, originally built this temple. Hence this place is called as Thiruvidaivaai. It was believed that Shiva was worshipped by Adhiseshan, Agasthiar and Sage Athri. This Shivastalam was added to the collection of 274 Shivasthalams in 1917 to make it 275. The temple and the Thevara hymns dedicated to this shrine in inscriptions were found during digging a mud mound and so is not a part of the original collection of the Thirumurais compiled by Nambiyandar Nambi. The pathigam here is referred to as Puthiya Pathigam. Appar refers to this shrine as Vidaivaikkudi in his Adaivu Thiruttandakam.

Special Features
There is no Rajagopuram and Kodimaram. Presiding Deity is called as Punyakoti Nathar / Idaivaainathar / Vidaivaayappar / Punyakotteeswarar. Presiding Deity is little big on Nagabaranam looks beautiful. Mother is called as Abirami / Umayammai. Ganapathi, Durga and other deities in the Devakoshtam are noteworthy. The sculpture showing Ambal holding Sambandar on her lap and offering the Holy Milk is located at the entrance of Abhirami shrine. Sambandar worshipping the God and the Goddess right on top of the main entrance is enchanting. Nandi is located in a small Mandapam facing main deity. This Temple is known for an important inscription. Unlike the inscriptions of other places, this one is nothing but a Thevaram Pathigams by Sambandar during his visit.This inscription came to light only in the year 1917. Until then, the number of Thevara Sthalams was 274 and with this finding the number went up to 275. Naalvar & Vinayagar and Ambal Sannidhi facing south are located in Arthamandapam. Dwarabalakars and Dwarabalakis paintings are located at the entrance of Lord and Mother Sanctums, Narthana Vinayagar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai are the Koshta Idols located on the sanctum walls. Shrines for Vinayagar, Subramaniyar, Bala Sastha, Bairavar, Navagraha, Surya, Chandran, Gajalakshmi and Sandikeswarar are located in the Prakaram. Here in this temple, Dakshina Moorthy is seen on Simhaasana mandapam. Sthala Vriksham is Kasturi Arali and Theertham is Sri Theertham / Punyakoti Theertham.
