Introduction
Ekambaranathar Temple is a Siva temple located in Tiruvekambathur in Ramnad District in Tamil Nadu (India). It is also known as Tiruvekambattu and Tiruvekambam. The presiding deity is known as Ekambaranathar/ Ekampareswarar. His consort is known as Snehavalli. The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old.The temple is considred as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam, sung by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Appar.
Puranic Significance
The temple is located with a three-tiered east facing Rajagopuram. Other Shrines Vinayaka, Subramania, Navagraha, Bairava and Chandra are found. In the kosta, Dakshinamurthy, Lingodbhava and Brahma are found. Ambal Snehakavalli is facing south. A Ganesha in sthalam is called Kubera Ganapati. Inscriptions dating back to the first Maravarman Sundara Pandian, the second Maravarman Sundara Pandian, the first Sadya Varman Vickrama Pandian and the first Sadyavarman Veerapandian have been found in this temple which is said to have worshiped Ravana. In the inscriptions the Lord is referred to as “Ekampamutaiya Nayanar”, “Thiruvekambamutaiya Thampiranar”. Thiruvegambattu is located on the Kalaiyarko – Thiruvananthapuram road. The temple is on the roadside. Buses are available from Sivagangai, Devakottai, Thiruvananthapuram, Kalaiyarkovil etc. Thiruvekambathur Ekampareswarar Temple is one of the well-maintained temples in Ramnad District.
