  • Deity: Lord Shiva (Eka Pushpa Priya Nathar) and Mother (Mathru Karunambika / Thaayinum Nallal / Surul Kuzhal Nayagi).
  • Location: Thiruthiyamalai Village, Musiri Taluk, Trichy District, Tamil Nadu.
  • Other Names: Thiruthiyamalai is also called Thiru Desa Malai.
  • Historical Significance: The temple is over 1500 years old and is located on a hillock resembling a fort.

Puranic Significance

  • The Legend of Argyadeva Valli Flower:
    • The flower appears only on a specific Maha Shivaratri day and is believed to grant salvation.
    • Sage Narada informed the rishis about the flower, and Brighu Maharishi was chosen to locate it.
    • After years of penance, Brighu Maharishi found the flower at Thiruthiyamalai with guidance from Sage Agasthiar and his wife, Lobamatha.
    • Brighu Maharishi saw the flower’s reflection in the “Kodi Pushpa Aadhi Mahamaha Theertham” (sacred spring) and received darshan of the actual flower.
  • Unique Event: Thousands of birds chanted “Om Namasivaya” in joy when the flower bloomed, signifying the sanctity of the place.

    • Lord Shiva as Eka Pushpa Priya Nathar is a Swayambhu Moorthy (self-manifested).
    • The Dwarapalakas (guardians) at this temple possess the “Netri Kann” (third eye), a rare feature representing Lord Shiva.

    • Mathru Karunambika is also called Thaayinum Nallal, meaning “more caring than a mother,” signifying her protective nature.
    • Devotees seek her blessings for resolving sins and difficulties, particularly related to marriage and womanhood.

    • The temple is situated on a hillock, with a 1 km Girivalam (circumambulation) route.
