Introduction

Sathyamurthi Perumal Temple in Thirumayam, a panchayat town in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Sathyamurthi Perumal and his consort Lakshmi as Ujeevana Thayar. The temple is believed to have been built during the 9th century by the Pandyas. A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all its shrines. The temple has a five-tiered rajagopuram, the gateway tower and is behind a fort built during the 15th century. The temple tank is located inside the premises. The temple is maintained and administered by the Archaeological Survey of India as a protected monument.

Puranic Significance

Two demons namely Madhu, Kaidapar came to abduct Sri Devi and Bhoodevi as Lord Perumal was asleep on the bed of Adhiseshan serpent. To escape from the demons Sri Devi hid herself on the bosom of Perumal while Bhoodevi hid herself under the lotus feet of Perumal. For his part Aadhiseshan spat his venom to drive the demons away. As the serpent did so without the permission of Perumal, it had its own fear. But Perumal comforted it saying that it had done only the good. To give testimony to it, the Aadhisesha here appears with his head shrunk in fear.
