Introduction
Thirumathalambakkam Thirumaleeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Thirumathalambakkam town, Arakkonam taluk, Vellore district, Tamil Nadu. This sthalam is divided into Thirumal + Tavam + Bhakkam and it is also said that Thirumal is resting here. They worship Easan with great fervour, and say that it is the place where their worries disappear and they gain strength. It is also said to be full of evil due to the place where Maha Lakshmi is frozen. Here the Presiding deity is called as Thirumaleeswarar and Mother is called as Tripurasundari.
Puranic Significance
Jalandran performed penance towards the Asura Easan and got rich gifts. He was blessed that ‘whatever power destroys him, it must destroy him from the place of his birth’. He made the gods very cruel in the pride he had received from Eason. Devas surrendered to Vishnu. But Maha Vishnu told them of the boon he had received and Easan himself had to destroy Jalandran. So he instructed them to pray to Eason. The first story says that Eason accepted the prayers of the Gods, appeared as Suyambu in Thirumalambakkam when Jalandran appeared, and killed him under the Thiruvarku near Karaikal.
Once upon a time Durvasa Maharishi offered a flower garland gifted by Mahalakshmi to Indra. He humiliated the sage by giving Ammalai to his Airavat (elephant) along with Indragarva. So the sage got angry and cursed, “Let all your wealth leave you”. He said, “If you go to the place where Lord Vishnu and Maha Lakshmi worship Easan every day and pray to Easan, you will recover all your lost wealth.”
Accordingly, when Indra, who had arrived here, was taking a daily bath in the Pushkarani, three Vritshas (plants) appeared in front of him. Awainelli, agatti, tulsi. Nellie is blessed as Ishvara, Agathi as thirumal and Tulasi as makalakshmi. These are still described as healing plants. The area where the temple is situated is said to have been ruled by two Chola kings.
Once there was a great battle between Puthiyagangaimannan and Pallavamannan and Rajarajacholan at Thakolam. Then Raja Raja Chola’s soldiers encamped at Thirumathalambakkam. Then, fearing that we will fail, he told Chola through Eason that he would freeze here and if he performed 11 times of worship and went to war, he would win. Raja Raja Chola did so and won. It is known from Thalapurana that Raja Rajacholan did many works for this temple. The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old.
