Introduction

• Location: The Bhairabi Temple is situated on the outskirts of Tezpur, in the Sonitpur District of Assam, India. The temple is positioned near the Bharali River and can be accessed by a long staircase that leads up from the approach road to the temple. The temple is managed by the District Deputy Commissioner’s office, and it holds significant familial association with the Borthakur family of Tezpur (Shri Dilip Borthakur, Shri Barenya Ranjan Borthakur, and Shri Aditya Prakash Borthakur).
• Significance: The temple is considered a sidhapitha, a place where people offer prayers to fulfill their desires and receive the blessings of Maa Bhairabi.

Puranic Significance

• Worship of Goddess Bhairavi: The Bhairabi Temple is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Bhairavi, one of the Mahavidyas associated with Maa Durga. It is an important Shakti temple in Assam. The temple’s spiritual significance is reinforced by its scenic backdrop, offering a view towards the Kolia Bhomora Setu across the Brahmaputra River.
• Legend of Usha: According to local legend, Usha, the daughter of the powerful Asura King Banasura, regularly visited this site to worship the Goddess. This connection with Usha further enhances the temple’s sacredness.
• Historical and Archaeological Significance: The Bamuni Hills, located a couple of kilometers away, feature ruins of an ancient palace that once stood there. The stone carvings and artworks found within this site date back to the 9th century.

Recent Damage

• Earthquake Damage: The Bhairabi Temple is over 600 years old but has suffered damage in recent times, particularly following a earthquake. The temple structure has tilted slightly, and the nearby building has also experienced damage to its western and southern sides. The earthquake caused cracked pillars, an unhinged roof, and damage to the second and third stories. As a result of the damage, daily prayers and religious ceremonies were temporarily halted.
