Puranic Significance
Bhudevi took the form of Lakshmi (Sreebherai) and bathed in the Tamiraparani river on a full moon day in the Tamil month of Pankuni, where she discovered two fish shaped ear rings, which she offered to Vishnu and hence the name Makara Nedunkuzhaikkaadan. Varuna, is believed to have worshipped Vishnu with an abhishekam on the full moon day in the month of Pankuni, to absolve himself of the sin of having insulted his Guru. This shrine is also regarded as a Sukrastalam. The theertham here is called the Sukra Pushkarini. The temple here is huge. After chanting the Ashtakshara mantra preached by Bhudevi Durvasar, she received two large kundalas while rising from the Tamiraparani. She received the title of Sri Perai. In Panguni Pavurnami, Lord Shiva received the name Makaranedungukulaikkathan to present to Perumal two fish-shaped kundalas received at Tamiraparani The name Thiruperai is derived from the name Bhumidevi Sri Perai. According to legend, Panguni married Lord Bhagavan in Pavurnami to get rid of the sin that had insulted Varuna Guru, and to get rid of the sin and worship the Lord and remove it and it rained.
