Introduction
Suramangalam Agatheeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Suramangalam village, Thirukkuvalai circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. From Thiruvarur – 15th KM on Thiruthurapoondi road, can reach Suramangalam Shiva Temple by going ½ km on Kolapadu road. The temple is located in a street thick with palm trees on the banks of a pond. Here the primary deity is called as Agatheeswarar and Mother is called as Akilandeswari.
Puranic Significance
The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. The east facing temple is to the south of the main gate. This Suramangalam is one of the places worshiped by Agathiyar and hence the Lord is known as Agathiswarar. The Lord Shiva is facing east. Goddess Akilandeswari is facing south. The entire temple is made of brick. There is a small Nandi in the front hall in front of the Lord and a small Nandi outside the hall. There is also a Nataraja shrine.
Among the Karurai Gosthas is Brahman Durga, who is then Muka lingam. Sandesar is in meditating posture. In the north-east there is a Navagraga mandapam and a small shrine for Bhairava. There are some Nagas near the Ambigai shrine. Although it is a small temple, regular pujas are performed here.
