Introduction

Nagamman temple is located in the Veeraperumal temple complex in the village of Sulakkarai near Virudhunagar district, Tamilnadu. The Temple is believed to be 500- 1000 years old. It is believed that those who worship at this temple will be cured of all diseases and blessed with peace & prosperity and get relief from Puthra dosha.

Puranic Significance

About four hundred years ago in the village of Sulakkarai, Muniswaran Aasari married his niece Mariamma. One morning when Mariamma was seven months pregnant, Muneeswaran went out to the field and found a snake (Cobra) in the mound. The Cobra heard the sound of footsteps and moved away. However, Muneeswaran, not wanting to miss the snake, took the scythe that was inserted in his back waist and cut it in the middle of the snake. The cut snake half-body went into the bush and hid. Part of the vibrant continent became lifeless for a while. Mariammal, who was pregnant on the eighth day of the incident, gave birth. The baby girl had a head and a snake body. It was then that Muneeswaran told his relatives and wife about the mistake he had made.

On the forty-first day after the birth of the child the cobra bit Muneeswaran. Mariamma after the death of her husband. She went to work in the fields. The locals called her the mother of the cobra because she gave birth to the Snake child. Nagammal’s relatives mercilessly chopped the snake child to pieces with a ray scythe and placed pieces on the eruption site in a field that had been ravaged by drought and covered it with clay. Nagammal wandered in the forest and fields in search of the snake child. On the night of the third day Nagammal appeared in a dream to the snake child, who told him that the relatives had chopped him up and the place where he had buried himself.

She hurried from there with speed, anger, and a head scarf. She came to the Veeraperumal temple on the outskirts of the village and cried and died. Following the Nagammal, there was a drought in the town. Snakes abounded in houses, gardens, and fields. Death by snake bite was high. The villagers gathered and built a temple, installed a statue of Nagamma, and performed pooja. The problems rested. Naga dosham withdrew.

There is a statue of Nagammal in the Veeraperumal temple complex at the place where Nagammal died. Nagammal is sitting with the baby snake in her hand.
