Puranic Significance
Mahavishnu asked Lord Shiva to grant him the blessing of Lord Shiva’s desire to become a Linga. Surprised by Lord Vishnu’s sincerity, Lord Shiva felt his grace. He was told that the lingam form would be available for him to perform his penance and worship for himself in the West. According to Mahavishnu Theertham, he came to this place on the banks of the river Vegavathi and looked east towards Lord Shiva. When Thirugnanasambandhar, who was on a pilgrimage to Sivathala, came to this place, he thought that it was Shiva who was standing in the dark, and stood in the distance behind Siva. Vishnu, who blew his mind with his song, just melted. When Vishnu became a Linga form till the half, Sambandar finished his medal. So, in the end, only his foot remained intact. Even now there is a lingam in the womb and a foot in front of it. Lord Shiva has risen to the East by the name of tharukheeswarar as he melted into the song of the sambar.
