Introduction
The temple is believed to have been completed in the 12th century AD. It is currently declared a “protected Monument ” by the Federal Archaeological Survey and is well maintained.
Puranic Significance
Sukriswarar Temple is associated with the epic Ramayana. The temple is named as Sukriswarar because the ape king Sukrivan built a lingam here to atone for the killing of his brother. In this sculpture, Sukrivan is worshiped
Special Features
1) There is a separate temple for Goddess Audainayaki and a separate temple for Lord Shiva. The separate temple to the goddess, on the right, seems to be the work of the Pandyas. 2) Uttarayana and Dakshinayana meet – while sunlight falls on Swami. 3) The type of the temple shows it is the work of Cholas. 4) Located on the ancient Kongu Trade Route of this temple, Lord Shiva is worshiped as “KurakkutaiNayanar”. 5) Although the temple was built by the Pandyas, some of the sculptures here date back to 5th century AD.
