- Temple Tradition:
- Follows the Vaikanasa Agamam tradition.
- Unity of Shaivism and Vaishnavism:
- The temple is a unique example of the integration of Shaivism and Vaishnavism, where Lord Vishnu is depicted standing on Lord Shiva (Avudaiyar), symbolizing the oneness of both faiths.
- Nakshatra Parihara Sthalam:
- This temple is particularly significant for individuals born under the Thiruvonam (Sharavana) Nakshatra, who are encouraged to visit the temple regularly, especially on their star days.
Puranic Significance
- Pundareeka Rishi’s Story:
- While returning from Kanchi after attending Brahmma’s Ashwamedha Yagam, Pundareeka Rishi desired to have darshan of Lord Vishnu on Vaikundha Ekadasi.
- He mistakenly entered a Shiva temple (originally dedicated to Lord Doosheshwarar) and, disappointed, left when he realized it was not a Vishnu temple.
- An elderly Brahmin clarified that the temple indeed housed Lord Vishnu. Upon re-entering, Pundareeka Rishi was astonished to find Lord Vishnu standing on top of Avudaiyar, where Shiva Lingams are placed.
- This divine manifestation conveyed the great philosophy that all Gods are ultimately one, and due to this divine darshan, Lord Vishnu here is called Prasanna Venkateswara Perumal.
Beliefs
- For Thiruvonam Nakshatra:
- Individuals born under the Thiruvonam Nakshatra are advised to visit the temple on their star days, as well as on Rohini and Hastham star days, and on the third day from the New Moon (Moondram Pirai).
