Introduction

ThirumangalamVickramaCholisuvar Temple is located near Mayiladuthurai. At present the temple is known as ‘Poologanatha Swami Temple’.. It is mentioned in the stone carvings as ‘VickramaCholisuvaram’.

Puranic Significance

An inscription on the south wall of the temple mentions that the Tribhuvan emperors had conquered Konerinam, and that the land was donated by the Emperor Rajendra chola to the Udayar Temple to build a gate. It is interesting to note that the lake here is also known as ‘Vickramasolan’. The temple is believed to have been built during the Vickramasochan period (AD 1118 – 1135).Therefore, we know that the daily special worships were properly conducted in this temple. You can also see sculptures of women dancing on the pillars of the Thirumangalam temple. On the pillars of the front hall are two embossed sculptures of two women dancing with their veils on. It is special that their names are engraved on the top of the sculptures. This temple hosts events like Sashtiyapta Purti and Sadabhishekam are conducted . On Shivaratri, the first Jama Puja is performed at the Thirumangala Poologanathar Sannidhi, the second Jama Puja is performed at the Sivaloganathar Temple in nearby Mangudi, the third Jama Puja is performed at the nearby Poikaikudi Naganathar Temple and the fourth Jama Puja is performed at the same Thirumangalam Puloka Nayaki Sametha Poologanathar Sannidhi.
