Introduction
Neelakandeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Sannidhi Street leading to the east gopuram of the Thiruvarur Thyagaraja Temple in Thiruvarur Town in Thiruvarur District of Tamilnadu. This is a small west facing temple with a 3-tier entrance gopuram in the south. Presiding Deity is called as Neelakandeswarar and is facing west and Mother is called as Mangalambikai and is facing south. The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. Thiruvarur is located at about 70 Kms from Thanjavur, 120 Kms from Trichy, and 42 Kms from Kumbakonam. Nearest Railway Station is located at Thiruvarur and Nearest Airport is located at Trichy.
Puranic Significance
Thiruneelakanta Nayanar, one of the sixty-three Nayanmars, once came to tiruvarur to have darshan of Lord Thyagaraja. Thiruvarur Neelakandeswarar Temple is the temple where Neelakanda Nayanar worshiped the Shivalinga facing west. Easen was named after Nayanar.
