Puranic Significance

  • According to legend, during the Satyug, demons became overwhelmingly powerful, causing destruction across the universe. The gods, seeking assistance, approached Lord Brahma for help.
  • Lord Brahma directed them to Lord Vishnu, who advised that only Lord Shiva could resolve their predicament.
  • Upon the gods’ appeal, Lord Shiva agreed to help and requested Yogmaya to incarnate as Mahakali.
  • Maa Kali fought valiantly against the demons, but her wrath escalated beyond control.
  • To pacify her, Lord Shiva transformed himself into a demon and engaged in a fierce battle with her. The fight lasted several days, culminating in Lord Shiva lying on the ground before her.
  • Recognizing Lord Shiva beneath her feet, Maa Kali’s anger subsided. However, due to the destruction caused during her fury, she was compelled to roam the forests for years, praying to Lord Shiva.
  • After countless years of penance, Lord Shiva was pleased and granted her Darshan, appearing as a Jyotirlinga at the site of her worship, which subsequently became known as Kaleshwar Mahadev.
  • It is believed by the temple caretakers and locals that during the monsoon season, the flow of the nearby river rises until it reaches the Shiva Lingam, after which the water subsides.
