Introduction
- Temple Name: Adityesvara Temple (also known as Kodandarameswara Temple).
- Location: Bokkasampalem village – Thondamanadu, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, around 7 km from Sri Kalahasti.
- Historical Significance: Built during the 10th century AD by King Parantaka over the remains of his father, King Adiya.
- Deities Worshipped:
- Main Deity: Lord Shiva as Kodandarameswara.
- Goddess: Mother Goddess Shakti as Kamakshi Devi.
- Shivling Size: Nearly 5 feet tall.
Puranic Significance
- Temple Orientation: The temple faces west, with an intricately sculpted Nandi facing the sanctum sanctorum.
- Structure:
- The main temple includes a porch, narrow antarala, and garbhagriha.
- The walls of the sanctum sanctorum and antarala are plain.
- Each wall features a devakoshta housing various deities:
- North Wall of Garbhagriha: Image of standing Brahma.
- West Wall: Figure of standing Vishnu.
- South Wall: Image of Dakshinamurti.
- South Wall of Antarala: Figure of standing Ganapati.
- North Wall of Antarala: Image of Durga.
- Water Feature: Below the niche on the north wall of the garbhagriha is a water spout ending in the shape of an ornamental gomukha (cow’s head).
- Vimana Design: The vimana above the sanctum is one tala with kuta and panjara designs, and the phalaka contains Nandis at four corners.
