Puranic Significance
- The Legend of Guru Bhagwan and Kacha:
- Guru Brihaspati, leader of the Devas, sent his son Kacha to learn the Sanjeevini mantra from Sukracharya, the preceptor of Asuras.
- The Asuras killed Kacha, dissolved his ashes in water, and tricked Sukracharya into consuming it.
- Sukracharya, at his daughter’s request, used his gnana drishti to discover the truth. He revived Kacha using the Sanjeevini mantra, which caused his own death in the process.
- Out of gratitude, Kacha also revived Sukracharya, but he refused to marry Sukracharya’s daughter, Devayani, considering her as his sister.
- When Kacha delayed returning to the Devas, Guru Bhagwan undertook penance here, invoking Lord Narayana’s blessings.
- Lord Narayana saved Kacha by using his discus (Chakrath Azhwar) to protect him from the Asuras.
- The place is named Guru Iruntha Thurai (later Kuruvithurai) as Guru Bhagwan worshipped here.
- Lord Narayana appeared on a special chariot and gave darshan to Guru Bhagwan on a Chitra Nakshatra day in the Tamil month of Chitrai, earning the title Chitra Ratha Vallabha Perumal.
