Introduction
- Deities:
- Lord Brahmapureeswarar in the form of a Swayambu Lingam.
- Devi Brahma Sampath Gowri as the consort.
- A separate shrine for Lord Brahma, depicted in a meditative pose sitting in Padmasana on a lotus.
- The temple also features the Jeeva Samadhi of Yogi Patanjali, the author of the Yoga Sutras.
- Lord Nataraja graces the temple as a classical dancer, with his spouse Parvati in the adjacent shrine as Sri Meenakshi.
- Mythological Significance:
- According to scriptures, Lord Brahma once had five heads, as equal to Lord Shiva.
- Brahma, responsible for creation, became arrogant and believed he was superior to Lord Shiva. To humble him, Lord Shiva took off one of Brahma’s heads.
- As a result, Brahma wandered to various Shiva temples seeking redemption, eventually reaching this temple. Hence, Lord Shiva here is praised as Brahmmapureeswarar, and Mother Brahmmavidyambikai (also known as Poongudiyal) is worshipped.
- Temple Reconstruction:
- The original temple was reduced to ruins over time, but was completely rebuilt.
