Introduction

Adi Narayana Perumal Temple is located at Enkan near Thiruvaur in Tamil Nadu. The unique aspect of the temple is that murti of Bhagavan Vishnu worshiped in the temple is sitting atop Garuda. Thus, devotees get the opportunity to have Garuda seva darshan daily. This is one rare temple where Vishnu appears atop Garuda in the sanctum santorum. Lord Vishnu graces from his sanctum sanctorum on his vehicle Garuda, which is a rare form in the Vishnu temples. Here the Lord comes in the mission of rescuing one of his disciples on his vahana Garuda. The temple is an ancient one with traditional architectures and sculptors. Shri Adhi Narayana Perumal temple is near Thiruvarur .

Puranic Significance

Legend has it that once Sage Brigu was performing penance in the place where the temple stands. A chola king led his hunting expedition through the place and this disturbed the penance of the Sage. When the sage opened his eyes he saw the king attempting to hunt a lion the sage in anger cursed the king to have the face of a lion. The king begged for forgiveness. The sage asked the king to take holy dip in Vettaru River and offer prayers to Vishnu. The king followed the advice of the sage and had darshan of Vishnu atop Garuda here. The king got back is human face on the Mrigasira star day.

Beliefs

Since the Lord is seen atop the Garuda Vahana, it is strongly believed that He will be in the mission of quickly rescuing His disciples on His Garuda Vahana. So, it is advised that the people who are born on the Mirugaseerisha Nakshathira have to visit the temple at least once in a year on the Mirugaseerisha Star Days. Another famous ritual that was performed in this temple is the special pooja that was done for getting a Baby Boon. The couple who are seeking the blessings of the Lord for having a child would have to make a frame with four sugarcanes and tie a sari on it like a cradle(Thooli in Tamil). Then they will have to place the fruits in it and carry it around the temple by doing Adipradakshina (step by step manner). By doing so it is strongly believed that they will be blessed with the baby soon. Apart from these significances, this temple is also considered as the Parihara Sthala for Naga Dosha and Pakshi Dosha.

The most important festivals observed here are Vaikunta Ekadasi, Garuda Panchami, Sri Krishna Jayanti (Gokula Ashtami) and Sri Ramnavami. Performing Tirumanjanam on Wednesdays and Saturdays are considered highly meritorious.
