Introduction
Varadaraja Perumal Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu located at Sithalapakkam near to Tambaram in Chennai, capital city of Tamilnadu. This is a very small temple. The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. Presiding Deity is Varadaraja Perumal along with his consorts Sreedevi and Bhoodevi.
Puranic Significance
The Temple is of recent construction but the idols of Varadarajar, Bhoodevi and Sridevi are ancient. These Idols were unearthed some decades back. All the idols were made of Green Stone (Pachai Kal). It is believed that idols were sculptured during Pallava Period. The Deepasthamba is ancient and is made of stone and unlike other temples; it is situated inside the temple itself. There are shrines of Vishwaksenar, Vedanta Desikar, Ramanujar, Sudarsana, Anjaneyar and Chakkarathalwar in the Temple premises. The Anjaneya is in meditation pose and near the ground level. This is a unique feature and also cites several examples of people coming here to mediate near this Anjaneya to fulfill their desires. The Chakkarathalwar (Prayoga Chakram) here is special with sixteen hands and in walking posture. The Narasimhar behind is in yoga posture sitting on top of Adhiseshan. This temple is a Parihara Sthalam for people unable to get married and for people without children.
