Puranic Significance
Chattanathar Temple is located in the centre of Sirkazhi; the four sides of this big temple are lined with chariot roads. At its north-east corner is Isanya Street, Pathinenpuraaneswarar temple is located on this street as the third temple facing east side. It is said that Lord Shiva was the leader of the compilation of eighteen Puranas when Bulavar was involved in the task of combining the Puranas together, thus he was known as the Pathinenpuraaneswarar. This old temple was dilapidated and encroached upon, but the reconstruction work was going on for the past one year. With all the work completed, the grand consecration of the temple took place recently. The Lord has his own sanctum facing east, Ambikai is in own shrine and his sanctum sanctorum is south facing. The Lord is in a medium-sized lingamurthy, and at the gate of the sanctum are the beautiful Vinayaka and Murugan. There are no temples or Goshtamurthys; there is a shrine for Sandesardani. There are three Nagas under one Neem tree. The old temple is believed to be 1000 years old.
