Introduction

  • Location: Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India.
  • Deity: Samayapurathal or Mariamman, a form of the supreme mother goddess Durga, Maha Kali, or Aadi Shakti.
  • Temple Features: The deity is made of sand and clay, and there are no abhishekams for the main idol. Instead, a small stone statue is bathed.
  • Significance: Second wealthiest temple in Tamil Nadu after Palani.

  • History: The current temple was built in the 18th century by King Vijayaraya Chakkaravarthi.
  • Legend: The deity was originally at the Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam but was moved due to illness caused by the idol. The idol was later found outside Srirangam, leading to the establishment of the temple.
  • Vijayanagar Kings’ Role: The temple was built after the kings’ victory in battle, fulfilling a vow to construct a shrine for the goddess.
  • Administration: Originally managed by Thiruvanaikaval temple, now independent under the Government of Tamil Nadu.
