Puranic Significance:
- The pathala subramanya swamy temple has great mythological significance. Legends state that Lord Murugan appeared here from beneath the earth (Pathala), blessing devotees with protection and prosperity. The name “Pathala Sembu” refers to this divine emergence.
- Siddhar Bogar’s Contribution: Siddhar Bogar, a revered figure, is said to have made the Balakumaran statue in Palaniyambadi out of Navabhashana (a mixture of nine metals), believed to promote physical and mental well-being.
- Lord Muruga’s Idol: The idol of Lord Muruga in the temple was created about 1000 years ago by a disciple of Siddhar Bogar, a spiritual guru from Thirukovilur, using a mixture of five metals (gold, silver, copper, iron, and lead).
- The idol was worshipped daily for its power to provide strength to the body.
- Gandhamaran’s Contribution: Several hundred years later, Gandhamaran, a descendant of Bhaskara Sethupathi, King of Ramanathapuram, realized the glory of the temple and initiated poojas.
- Devotees later gathered to construct a new temple, and Kumbabhishekam (consecration) was performed recently.
