Introduction
Introduction
- A 12th-century temple located in Puttur, Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka.
- Dedicated to Lord Shiva, known locally as Puttur Mahalingeshwara.
Puranic Significance
- Origin linked to three Smartha-cult Sthanika Brahmins carrying a Shiva Linga from Kashi.
- One Brahmin reached Puttur and performed pooja for the Shiva Linga at the Banga King’s palace, blessing the King’s sister to safely deliver a baby.
- During pooja, the Shiva Linga was placed on the ground, and it became immovable despite multiple attempts, even by an elephant.
- The Linga grew to a massive size, killing the elephant, whose body parts scattered around Puttur. Local place names like Kombettu, Kariyala, and Taleppady are derived from where the parts fell.
- A belief emerged that elephants cannot survive drinking water from the temple tank.
