POTTRAMARAI KULAM (THE GOLDEN LOTUS POND)

The Pottramarai Kulam, also known as the Golden Lotus Pond, holds great significance in Hindu mythology and history. It is believed that the pond was created by Lord Sivaperuman using his `Soolam’ (three-pronged spear) in response to the pleas of Nandhi Devar and other deities. The pond earned its name because it was here that the Golden Lotus bloomed for Indra’s pooja. It is also known as Adhi Theertham, Sivaganga, and Uthama Theertham.

Several significant events are associated with this sacred pond. It is believed that the plank of Sangam appeared here, establishing the greatness of the moral text called Thirukkural. Additionally, Chockalingam was found here by Saint Srilasri Guru Gnanasambandar. The pond is renowned for its miraculous nature, as no fish or other life forms are found in its waters, in accordance with a boon granted by the Lord to a stork.

Devotees who bathe in the waters of the Golden Lotus Pond on auspicious days such as Amavasya (new moon), the first day of the month, and eclipse days, and worship the Lord, are believed to be blessed with success in all their endeavors. The pond is considered the most important of all theerthams (sacred ponds) and is believed to confer prosperity and grant heavenly abode to those who bathe in it.
