Introduction
Poravachery Sornapureeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Poravachery village, Nagai circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. Boravacheri village was later known as Poravacheri. This Poravacheri is next to the Tiruvarur- Nagai road. This name may be Puravalarcheri because of the village where patrons lived and helped the bereaved. The presiding deity is called as Sormapureeswarar in the form of lingam and Mother is called as Soundaranayaki.
Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old Shiva temple in this village. There are two Shiva temples in this town. One is known as Kandasamy Temple. Next to the main road is a Sormapureeswarar Shiva temple. There is a large pond at the back of the temple, which is the Sornapureeswarar temple, but it is not known from the outside that it is surrounded by houses and shops on all four sides.
The entire temple is built mostly of black stone; the villagers renovated the front Gopuram. Beyond it Lord Sornapureeswarar is facing east facing mandapam in which Ambigai Soundaranayaki is facing south and the mandapam in front of Lord Sonarpureeswarar is beautiful. Nandi also sits smiling before the Lord. Ghoshta includes Vinayagar Thenmukhan Lingotpavar Brahman Durgai. Other deities are Lord Ganesha Murugan Mahalakshmi. In the north-east are Navagraham Bhairavas.
