Introduction

The Poonthottam Yoga Muthumari Amman Temple is located in Poonthottam village, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu, just 2 kilometers west of the renowned Alangudi Guru Sthala. The presiding deity of the temple is Yoga Muthumari Amman, revered as the divine protector and benefactor of the village.

Puranic Significance

The temple has deep mythological roots tied to the destruction of a demon named Marasura, who terrorized the three worlds after receiving immense boons and strength through severe penance.

Overcome by arrogance, Marasura caused suffering to devas and humans alike. In their distress, they appealed to Parashakti for protection.
Responding to their plea, Parashakti manifested in fierce anger, defeated the demon by lifting him by his legs, pressing his head to the ground, and ultimately vanquishing him.
Following this victory, Parashakti graced the region in the form of Yoga Muthumari Amman.

Centuries ago, Poonthottam was a small, underdeveloped village with only thatched huts. The people struggled to access even basic healthcare and lived in economic hardship. The divine presence of Muthumari Amman transformed the village, bringing prosperity and good health to the inhabitants. Since the establishment of her worship, devotees have experienced relief from ailments and economic development, attributing their progress and well-being to the blessings of the deity.
