Introduction
Periyakothur Sundareswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Periyakothur village, Mannargudi circle, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. Kotavanur became Kottur and now exists as Kottur. Presently it is known as Periyakottur and Small Kottur. A thousand- five hundred years old temple of the Cholas in the village of “Periyakottur” was in a dilapidated state for many years. Eason has risen as a self-portrait in the name of Sundareswarar.
Puranic Significance
This temple has many features, is said to have two grand forms during the Chola period. Over the years, this ruined temple has been reconstructed at a huge cost by the people. Kumbhabhishekam has taken place on 3.6.2018. The Lord is facing east on the bank of Periyakulam, the sanctum is in a wide square shape, there is Arthamandapam, Mahamandapam and Chola building in front of it. Ambikai sanctum is situated towards the south side.
Vinayak, Dakshanamurti, Lingotpavar, the oldest idols in the Lord’s sanctum, Ambikai may have been created recently. In the north-east there are two Bhairavas. There are five Vinayagars in this temple. A place to worship Panchavinayakar. It is the belief of the people of this region that those who wish to anoint the Lord at this place will get jobs in other countries.
