Puranic Significance

The temple is built by Aditya Chola. In olden days the temple is called as Adhichechuram. Moolavar Aditheshwar is the only one in the sanctum sanctorum. The Ganesha Sannidhi, the Murugan Sannidhi, the Kajalakshmi Sannidhi and the Chandikeswarar Sannidhi are newly constructed. The other three sides give the view of the temple without a wall. Pujas have also stopped. Legend has it that Ambika wandered around the world as a cow due to a curse, was protected by Mahavishnu, got rid of the curse at Thiruvaduthurai and married Lord Shiva again at Thirumanancheri. Sthalam is one of them. It is at this place that Lord Shiva is said to have followed Ambika in the form of a cow with a large bull.
