Introduction
Location and Significance:
- The Subramanya Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga, located in Perambur, Thiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu.
- Though Lord Shiva is the presiding deity of the temple, significant importance is given to Lord Muruga.
- The temple is located 14 km from Peralam, 13 km from Sirupuliyur, 38 km from Thiruvarur, and 140 km from Trichy. The nearest railway stations are at Peralam and Mayiladuthurai, with the nearest airport in Trichy.
Puranic Significance:
- Etymology: The place was once a Pirambu forest, which is why it is called Perambur. It is also known as Brahma Mangalapuram because Brahma sought Upadesam (spiritual teachings) from Lord Muruga.
- Gnana Guru: Lord Muruga is revered as a Gnana Guru (teacher of wisdom). After killing Soorapadman, who had harassed the devas and sages, Lord Muruga transformed Soorapadman into a cock and a peacock. The peacock, as well as Brahma, requested spiritual teachings from Lord Muruga, who then imparted the Gnana Upadesam to them.
- The temple is believed to be 1500 years old, with an east-facing entrance and a five-tiered Rajagopuram (main tower). The temple has two prakarams (outer courtyards), and Arthamandapam and Mahamandapam (pillared halls).
Deities and Structure:
- The presiding deity is Jambunathar, also known as Jambukeswarar or Brahmapuriswarar. The Mother Goddess is Akilandeswari or Ananthavalli.
- A unique feature of the temple is that the peacock (Muruga’s mount) has its head turned to the left, which is the opposite of most Murugan temples where the peacock’s head faces right.
- Lord Muruga, along with his consorts Valli and Deivanai, is housed in a separate sanctum. Lord Muruga is depicted with 12 arms and sitting on the peacock.
- There are separate shrines for Valli (facing south), Chandikeswarar (in the form of Guha Chandikeswarar), and Dhakshinamoorthy (as Guha Dhakshinamoorthy) with a peacock at his feet.
- The temple has other important shrines, including Vinayaga, Idumban, Adhi Vinayagar, Mahalakshmi, Gangai Amman, Athi Devasena, Brahmapureeswarar, and Ananthavalli.
- Koshta idols such as Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingodhbava, Brahma, and Chandikeswarar surround the sanctum of Brahmapureeswarar.
- The idol of Milagu Chettiyar, who contributed significantly to temple renovations, is kept near the Nandhi statue and receives special worship on Thiruvathirai Day.
Unique Features:
- In most Shiva temples, the Murugan shrine is located behind the Shiva shrine in the northwest direction. However, in this temple, since Lord Muruga is considered a Guru, the Shiva shrine is placed behind Lord Muruga’s shrine in the northwest.
Beliefs:
- It is believed that worshipping at this temple will cure diseases and bring peace and prosperity to the devotees.
Festivals:
- Festivals related to Lord Muruga are celebrated with much fanfare in this temple, particularly those associated with Murugan’s life and exploits.
