Introduction
Mathyapureeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Paranjervazhi in Erode District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Mathyapureeswarar / Nattoor Nathar and Mother is called as Sugantha Kunthalambigai / Nattuvar Kuzhaliyammai. The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Appar. Paranjervazhi was called as Parappalli / Nattoor in ancient times.
Puranic Significance
During the renovations of 1954 AD, lot of inscriptions was lost. Only few inscriptions belonged to Kongu Chola Rajathiraja Veera Narayana Veera Chola were left in the Temple premises. All his inscriptions talk about his contribution to the Temple. Mathyapureeswarar / Nattoor Nathar: The place was called as Nattur (Nadu – Middle & Oor – Village) in ancient times. Nattur equivalent in Sanskrit is Mathiyapuri. Hence, the Lord came to be called as Mathyapureeswarar in Sanskrit and Nattoor Nathar in Tamil. Parapalli: The place was also called as Parappalli. Paran means Lord Shiva and Palli means Abode. Parapalli means Abode of Lord Shiva.
Special Features
The Temple is facing east. There is no Rajagopuram. Balipeedam and Nandi Mandapam can be found facing the sanctum. After crossing Balipeedam and Nandi Mandapam, a thousand years old elephant idol can be found in the Temple. There is a Deepastambam, situated outside the Temple as per Kongu tradition. Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Mahamandapam, Arthamandapam and Sanctum. Presiding Deity is called as Mathyapureeswarar / Nattoor Nathar. He is a Swayambhu Moorthy and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. He is housed in square Avudaiyar. Dakshinamurthy, Nardana Ganapathy, Lingodbhava and Brahma are the Koshta Idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar can be found in his usual location. Utsava Idols of Chandrasekarar and Soundaravalli can be seen. Mother is called as Sugantha Kunthalambigai / Nattuvar Kuzhaliyammai. She is housed in a separate shrine. Her Shrine is situated in the left side of the Sanctum. She is in standing posture and is facing east. Idols of Bhairava and Surya can be found in the Temple premises. There is a shrine for Chandra in the Temple premises.
Festivals
Navaratri, Vijayadashami, Karthigai Deepam, Margazhi Thiruvadhirai and Monthly Pradoshams are celebrated here.
