Introduction
Palayanur Sundareswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Palayanur village, Koothanallur taluk, Thiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. This Palayanur village is situated on the north bank of Vennar River. Towards the east, the temple has a mandapam-like entrance and beyond it is a long stone mandapam, which also has a Nandi and altar facing the Lord. Here the Presiding deity is called as Sundareswarar and Mother is called as Soundaranayaki
Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old. In the sanctum sanctorum the Lord is in the form of a beautiful big lingam. Among them are Tenmugan Brahman Durga are seen in the sanctum. Tenmugan and Brahma are Chola period statues. Both Vinayakar and Murugan have separate sanctum in the temple. There is a mandapam in the south-east and Navagraha of Lord in the north-east. And there is a temple of Anjaneya to the south, in front of which is Sri Rama’s foot. Due to the presence of Anjaneya, Tulsi is abundant all over the temple premises.
