Introduction
Nagammal temple is located in the town of Otthakadai in Dindigul district, Tamilnadu. Here the Primary deity is called as Nagammal, for the worship of Naga. The Temple is believed to be 300 years old.
Puranic Significance
It is said that, a big Serpent appeared in the dream of some people who were farming in this area and asked for a place to live in a green place and accordingly the temple was built here. The temple is situated in a natural environment surrounded by banyan tree, pipal tree, and neem tree. There is a trident in front of the temple and a five-headed Serpent is seen in this small temple.
Nagammal is consecrated in the form of Arava in the sanctum sanctorum. Abhishek services are held daily. It is believed that if you worship this goddess who graces you in the form of a Serpent, all the Naga doshas will be removed. Near the temple there is a 5 feet tall tank. The people say there is a Serpent in it. And they worship with milk and eggs.
Beliefs
Women who wish to have a child pray to Nagammal and fast for a week, then buy a small cradle and tie it to a neem tree, believing that a child will be born. Unmarried male and female devotees buy yellow rope, pray and tie it to a tree in the belief that the bridegroom will soon be found. They offer prayers and sacrifices to Nagammal.
